Imagine for a moment a child who loves to perform. It lights up the world to see people happy and laughing and smiling at performances. Now imagine that every time one performs, they get abused. First they are locked in closets or burned with curling irons, which escalates to being dumped on the side of the road and left for dead. At 7 years old.
This story is not made up in any way. It is the true story of Transformational Coach & Self Love Advocate Tiffany Toombs. The abuse she experienced came at the hands of her stepmom, a women with a history of 4 physically violent relationships. Toombs’ own personal history of abuse, which shows how domestic violence is perpetuated and passed down through generations, led to her mission to help Domestic Violence survivors take their power back and find healthy, meaningful relationships by loving themselves and recognizing self worth.
“1 in 3 women in the United States experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime,” states Toombs. “With 1 in 4 women experiencing severe physical violence.”
Women’s shelters around the US are limited in year in the assistance they can provide, purely because of the overwhelming need for support. “There are more than 2 times as many animal shelters in the US as there are shelters for women and their children in need. Meaning that women aren’t always able to get the support they need to get out, and stay out of these toxic relationships. And to heal their trauma so it doesn’t become a cycle like I experienced,” says Toombs.
Every holiday season there are plenty of charitable drives to ensure the children are looked after for Christmas. This year, Toombs and her team are stepping up to make sure those women and mothers are not forgotten during the Christmas season.
“A lot of these women that end up living in shelters, or worse – on the streets, go without having their basic needs met. For example, feminine hygiene products are considered a ‘luxury’ item. This means that many women in these situations go without maxipads or tampons, instead turning to used newspaper to meet their needs during their period” Toombs shares.
Studies show that the average American woman owns 11 handbags. We are asking women in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to donate their gently used handbags to a woman in need, and if you’d like to fill the handbag with some items for the women, that’s great!
We are also seeking local Dallas businesses to donate either money or items for us to fill the handbags with essential (and some non-essential!) items for these women so they can feel special this holiday season as well!
Here is a list of items that we recommend filling the bags with:
Basic Needs Women In Shelters Require:
· Feminine hygiene products: maxi pads, tampons
· Oral hygiene products: toothbrush, toothpaste
· Hair care products: shampoo, conditioner, hair spray
· Make-up: foundation, concealer, mascara, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick, chapstick, moisturizer
· Undergarments: bras, underwear
· Other: towels, facecloths, public transport cards, phone cards
Additional Ideas For The Handbags:
· Perfume
· Jewelry: necklaces, earrings
· Sunglasses
· Books, magazines
· Gift cards for services: haircuts, manicures, etc
· Bath salts
· Essential oils
Toombs and her team will hand out all the donated bags and items, along with free access to some of Toombs’ mindset reprogramming course, to women in local DFW shelters a couple days before Christmas.
