Author Makes Multicultural Children’s Book Mysteries, Halloween Costume Ideas

Diverse children's book publisher says Halloween should be inclusive and funny, not scary. It's Mini-mysteries for Minors picture book series has laughs, ideas for children's Halloween costumes.

Author Karl Beckstrand’s childhood nightmares and active imagination have provided funny material for his Mini-mysteries for Minors picture book series. As an adult, he’s kept awake at night more from an overactive brain or “forgetting to silence my phone,” he said.

Beckstrand’s first children’s book was “Sounds in the House: A Mystery” about a scaredy-cat dog comically freaking out over simple creaks and bumps. “It’s a humorous story about facing your fears, which usually turn out to be silly,” said Beckstrand. After the story was made into a Spanish-English story app, Kirkus Reviews said it was “suspenseful without ever getting too intense for younger readers.”

Beckstrand’s newest book, “Great Cape o’ Colors – Capa de colores,” isn’t a mystery; but it offers lots of great Halloween costume ideas for children and adults. Ideas include a judge, a professor, a wizard, a space ranger, superheroes, acrobats, a musketeer, a monk, a magician and a wrestler. It’s child safe, bilingual, multicultural and free for Kindle Unlimited users.

John Collado, “Great Cape o’ Colors” illustrator, liked Beckstrand’s idea of making a coloring book version of the book using Collado’s original line art. With single language options — and hard, soft and ebook formats — there are ten versions of this title, all released this year.

“Great Cape o’ Colors” is also the fourth book in Beckstrand’s Careers for Kids series.
